Thors Journey

Thor was surrendered to Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control in June of 2023 after his owner suddenly passed away and the family was unable to find a new home for him. During a routine veterinary exam, it was discovered that Thor had a cruciate ligament tear. Knowing this CCL injury could limit his future mobility and adoptability Critter Crusaders immediately stepped in to provide medical support for Thor.

Thor Meets The Doc and Prepares For Surguery

Thor visited Dr. Chad Spah at Blue Pearl in Des Moines for a consultation and restorative CCL surgery. When the CCL is torn or injured, the shin bone slides forward. Often, dogs with this injury cannot walk normally and they experience continuous pain. The resulting instability damages the cartilage and surrounding bones and leads to osteoarthritis. This surgery was going to be an amazing upgrade for Thor and his quality of life.

Thor Recovers from CCL Surgery 1

After receiving FHFF's grant support, Thor received his much-needed CCL surgery and is recovering quite well in his foster home. Rehabilitation following CCL surgery is an important part of the recovery process. During the next few months, Thor's fosters will ensure he does not use the leg too much too soon, which is always fun with a breed meant for moving.

Thor Needs a Second CCL Surgery

Although Thor recovered from his first CCL Surgery quite well, the pressure from favoring his good leg for so long resulted in another CCL tear. With faith in his ability to recover from another surgery, Critter Crusaders pushed forward with their dedication to get Thor healthy and back into a loving forever home and prepared him for a second CCL Surgery.

Thor Gets Some Spa Treatment

After a long and grueling recovery, Thor needs a good grooming before making his big debut. The Great Pyrenees have long multilayered coats that can easily matte up. Good grooming is a must for this breed and definitely for our Thor.

A note from The Kirkwood Pet Grooming Team who did an amazing job on this beautiful boy. "Thor is an absolute angel! There are no other words to describe him than as a gentle giant. Throughout the entire grooming process, Thor sat back and enjoyed being treated like a King! Due to his thick double coat, it is suggested that Thor receive routine grooming to help remove the dense hair that traps in body heat. Thor is more than welcome back at our facility!"

The Mighty Thor is Ready and Looking For His Forever Home

If you've been watching the updates on Thor, get ready for our best news yet!

Thor is recovered and ready to find his new forever family! He has had a hard journey but he has been surrounded by love the whole time. Thor is very loving and enjoys everyone he meets. His foster mom had two schnauzers in the home and lived with other dogs before being surrendered. Thor has not been around cats. He is a VERY big boy at 110 lbs. He is housebroken and knows basic commands. He loves walks, tummy rubs, attention, car rides, and grooming. Thor will need a patient owner who understands the breed and all he has been through. Thor is hesitant about stairs, especially with all his surgeries. He is currently still in foster care soaking in the love with his foster mom.
